I do not have a pleasant memory of a time with my father.  After my parents separated, I lived with him among the clutter and junk in his dimly lit New York City house.  He tried to make me lose weight by his own methods.  He tried to make me a better student by pushing me to limits undesirable to an adolescent.  He tried to make me live up to his standards of what it is to be a well developed person while I only wanted to be a child.  Instead of cartoons and sitcoms, I had PBS’ The News Hour.  Instead of friends, I had books.  I was eight years old, and all I wanted was to spend time with my friends who seemed to have much more charming lives.  Going to school was the closest thing I had to escaping him, and even there I felt as though I was only going for him—not myself.  I felt like I was living in a fairy tale, but waiting for a fairy godmother for so long had become unbearable by the time I was twelve years old.  After much yelling, I walked out of the house in 1999.  He watched me leave.  Though I made it out, that past life continues to follow and haunt me.

These are the memories of a life with him.
